When a standby generator fails in an outage, the trouble often started weeks earlier. It can be a dead battery, a fuel issue, a failed sensor or a skipped service.

What standby generator problems do we fix?
Your tech will check for each of these, then tell you what failed and why.
- Battery failure
- Low oil or oil pressure faults
- Fuel supply problems
- Transfer switch faults
- Controller errors and sensor failures
- Starter and alternator issues
Your tech checks the fuel supply too, natural gas or propane. Dominion Energy South Carolina supplies natural gas in Florence County. Propane is widely available across the rural Pee Dee, and your supplier sets and fills the tank.
Why does a working generator matter in the Pee Dee?
The January 2004 ice storm knocked out power across Florence County. In February 2014, Winter Storm Pax cut power to about 144,000 co-op members.
Most of those members were in the Midlands and Pee Dee. Most had power back in about eight days.
Florence averages about 70 days a year at 90 degrees or higher. Florence Regional Airport hit 8 degrees on February 2, 2026.
A generator that won’t start can leave the house hot in July or cold in February. For an older parent or a newborn, that matters even more.
What should I do while my generator is down?
If you use a portable generator until the repair, follow this guidance from CDC, FEMA, Generac and Duke Energy.
- Run it outdoors only, more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
- Never run it in your home or garage. Keep battery carbon monoxide alarms inside.
- Never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring.
- Backfeeding without a transfer switch can electrocute utility workers and violates the National Electrical Code.
- Duke Energy advises a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician.
Generator repair questions
My generator shows an error code. What do I do?
Write down the code, stop trying to start it, and call (843) 920-2004. Your Quality Service Company tech can learn a lot from the code before the visit. If you run a portable generator meanwhile, keep it outdoors, more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
Should I run it after a repair?
Yes, a repaired generator should run and be tested before the next outage.
