Generac and Cummins generators
Quality Service Company, LLC handles standby generator installation in Florence, SC and the Pee Dee region. We are an authorized Generac and Cummins dealer.
Each install is three jobs in one: the electrical work, the fuel connection and the placement. HVAC, plumbing, electrical and generators. One company, one number.
What happens during a generator install?
- Site visit. We walk the house with you and talk about what must keep running. We check for natural gas or a propane option and pick a spot that meets code.
- Written quote. It lists the generator, transfer switch, pad, fuel connection and electrical work. You see the price before any work starts.
- Installation. We set the pad and the generator, then connect the transfer switch and the fuel.
- Start-up. We start the unit, test it under load and set its weekly self-test. Then we show you how the controls work.
Whole house or just the essentials?
A whole-house generator runs everything in the home. An essential-circuits setup runs only the circuits you pick, such as:
- Air conditioning
- Refrigerator and freezer
- Well pump
- Lights and the outlets you choose
NOAA normals show Florence averages 70.2 days a year at 90 degrees or higher. Think about whether AC belongs on your list.
We can quote both setups, so you can compare them side by side.
Outages on record in the Pee Dee
Winter outages here have lasted days:
- Ice storm, January 26, 2004. The National Weather Service reported power out across Florence County.
- Winter Storm Pax, February 2014. About 144,000 co-op members lost power, most in the Midlands and Pee Dee. Most had power back in about eight days.
- Arctic cold, December 2022. More than 75,000 South Carolina customers lost power on December 23. Florence Regional Airport hit 15 degrees on December 24 and 14 on December 26.
If someone at home needs steady heat or AC, plan for days like these.
Questions about generator installation
How long does it take to get one installed?
We set the install date with you after the site visit. Equipment availability, the permit and the fuel connection all affect when your generator is ready. If you need propane, your supplier sets and fills the tank on their schedule.
Do I need a concrete pad?
Most standby generators sit on a composite or concrete pad. The pad is on your quote. We pick the spot with you at the site visit. The unit sits level and meets code. You see the full price before work starts.
Natural gas or propane: which fuel fits my home?
If gas runs to your street, a natural-gas generator runs from the line. Dominion Energy South Carolina supplies natural gas in Florence County. There is no tank to refill while gas service stays on.
No gas at your address? A propane generator runs from a tank instead. Propane is widely available across the rural Pee Dee from regional suppliers. The tank is a separate cost, and your supplier sets and fills it.
We check which fuel is available at your home during the site visit.
Load management, safe connections and permits
Load management
Load management lets a smaller generator cover more of the house. Generac’s Smart Management Modules handle up to 8 loads. Generac says this “allows for a reduction in the minimum size of the generator for a more cost-effective installation.”
Generac also says its HVAC energy manager “reduces the need to oversize your generator.”
Safe connections
Using a portable generator? Follow this CDC and FEMA guidance:
- Run it outdoors only, more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
- Never run it inside your home or garage.
- Keep battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms in the house.
- Never connect it directly to your home’s wiring.
Generac warns that backfeeding without a transfer switch can electrocute utility workers. It also violates the National Electrical Code. Duke Energy says a licensed electrician should install the transfer switch.
Permits
The City of Florence trade permit form lists generators under electrical permits. It also has a gas permit. Florence County Building Inspection requires a permit to alter or repair a building.
South Carolina enforces the 2020 National Electrical Code with state changes.
