How hard does Florence weather work your system?

At Florence Regional Airport, a normal July has a high of 92 and a low of 72. The airport averages about 70 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter. It reached 103 on July 27, 2025, and 100 on July 5 and July 8, 2026.

The airport also averages about 40 nights a year at 32 degrees or colder. In December 2022, it saw lows of 15 and 14 degrees. Heating and cooling needs in Florence are about the same size, so a new system should fit both seasons.

On Christmas Day 2022, a city water main broke during that cold snap. With leaks in homes, businesses and sprinkler systems, Florence lost at least 20 million gallons. Residents were asked to drip faucets, and a boil advisory covered the whole system.

Where does Florence city water come from?

The City of Florence’s 2024 water quality report says about 60% of city water comes from groundwater wells. The other 40% comes from the Frank E. Willis Pee Dee River Regional Surface Water Plant. The system serves about 79,745 people, and its main source is the McQueen Branch Aquifer.

The city’s report flags no violations, and it lists no hardness or iron figures. If your Florence water looks or smells off, a test at your tap shows what’s in it. Your tech will test it and explain your options.

River floods can reach your tap, too. During Debby in August 2024, the City of Florence shut its water plant because of river flooding. Low pressure and a boil advisory followed across the system.

Why do Florence homes plan for storms and outages?

In the January 2004 ice storm, the National Weather Service reported power out countywide in Florence County. In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew dropped 11.74 inches of rain on Florence Regional Airport in one day. That’s the most in more than 120 years of records there.

In September 2018, Hurricane Florence pushed the Pee Dee River near Florence to a crest of 61.01 feet. If floodwater reaches your equipment, don’t restart it until it’s checked. NEMA says water-damaged breakers, fuses, GFCI and AFCI devices should be replaced.

We’re an authorized Generac and Cummins dealer, and we install standby generators for Florence homes.

If your street has a Dominion gas line, a standby generator can run on natural gas. If not, it runs on propane. Generac says its Load Manager can lower the minimum generator size a home needs.

How do I run a portable generator safely?

Sources: CDC, FEMA and Duke Energy.

  • Run it outdoors only, more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
  • Never run it in your home or garage, and keep battery CO alarms inside.
  • Never connect it to your home’s wiring. Use a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician.

Florence homeowners ask us

Do I have natural gas?

If you have a gas meter outside or a Dominion Energy gas bill, you have natural gas. Dominion Energy South Carolina supplies natural gas in Florence County. Without a gas line, propane runs the same equipment. Your supplier sets and fills the tank. All-electric works too.

Do I need a permit for an AC or water heater?

An AC or water heater job in Florence usually needs a permit. The City of Florence trade permit form covers mechanical, plumbing (including water heaters), electrical, generator and gas work. Florence County requires a permit to alter or repair a building.

Why is my water brown?

Brown water can have more than one cause, so the first step is a test at your tap. Florence city water comes from groundwater wells and the Pee Dee River, and the city’s 2024 report lists no iron figures. Your tech will test the water, check your pipes and water heater, then explain the cause and your options.
