Quality Service Company, LLC installs hybrid water heaters in Florence, SC and across the Pee Dee. A hybrid is a tank water heater with a small heat pump on top. The heat pump pulls warmth from the air around the tank and moves it into the water.

Moving heat takes less power than making it. DOE says a heat pump water heater can be two to three times as efficient as a standard electric tank.

We’re an authorized Rheem dealer for water heaters. Your plumber will check the space, the power and the drain, then quote the job before any work starts.

Is a hybrid water heater a good fit for your home?

  • All-electric homes replacing an electric tank
  • A garage, utility room or other roomy spot for the tank
  • Households that want a tank’s steady supply with a smaller power bill for hot water
  • Homes with a 240-volt water heater circuit already in place

Have natural gas? A tankless water heater may suit you better. We’ll walk through both.

Which hybrid water heater do we install?

We install the Rheem Hybrid Electric Heat Pump water heater in 40, 50, 65 and 80 gallon sizes. Here is what Rheem lists for it:

  • ENERGY STAR certified, with a 3.50 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF), the rating DOE uses to compare water heaters.
  • Five operating modes, including a Vacation setting for when you’re away.
  • EcoNet Wi-Fi built in. The app shows energy use, lets you set schedules and sends maintenance alerts.
  • Leak sensor ready. Rheem’s LeakSense sensor can be added to warn you of a leak at the tank.

Your plumber will help you pick the size. It depends on how many people live in the home and how much hot water you use at once.

What does a hybrid water heater need?

  • Air to work with. Rheem’s manual calls for more than 700 cubic feet of space around the tank. A smaller room can work with louvered doors or ducting.
  • A drain. The heat pump pulls water out of the air, and that water needs a place to go.
  • Power. A 208 to 240 volt circuit on a 30 amp breaker.
  • A spot that doesn’t freeze. When the air around the tank gets too cold, the heat pump stops and the electric elements take over.

The tank also cools and dries the air around it. In a Florence summer, that helps in a hot garage. In winter, a tank inside the heated house takes some of that heat with it.

What does a hybrid install include?

  • Checking the room, the drain and your electrical panel
  • Removing the old water heater and installing the new one
  • Running the drain line for the water the heat pump collects
  • Showing you the operating modes and the EcoNet app

You can add a mixing valve, a recirculation pump for faster hot water at the tap, or a vibration isolation kit to keep the unit quiet on a hard floor. In the City of Florence, a water heater falls under the plumbing permit.

If your panel needs work for the new circuit, we do that too. HVAC, plumbing, electrical and generators. One company, one number.

Common questions about hybrid water heaters

Will a hybrid run out of hot water?

A hybrid holds a full tank like a standard water heater. When the house uses a lot at once, it can run its electric elements too, so the tank recovers faster. Picking the right size matters most.

Is it noisy?

You’ll hear a fan and a compressor when the heat pump runs. That’s one reason a garage or utility room is a good spot.

Are there rebates?

Duke Energy Progress offers rebates on qualifying heat pump water heaters. Amounts vary, so check Duke’s current program before you plan. If a co-op serves your home, ask it what it offers. See our energy efficiency page for the programs we checked.

Does it need maintenance?

Yes. The air filter on top needs cleaning, and the tank needs flushing like any tank heater. The EcoNet app sends maintenance alerts, and your tech can show you both jobs.

Brooks Hunsucker with Quality Service Co. did a great job replacing my home’s broken water heater tank with a new tankless natural gas water heater. Brooks was professional, detailed, and got the job done as quickly as possible so as to minimize our time without hot water. Thank you, Brooks and Quality Service Co!
