A standby generator is installed permanently at your home. It runs the circuits you choose when the grid goes down.
How long can the power stay out around Florence?
Power around Florence can stay out for days. After the January 26, 2004 ice storm, the National Weather Service in Wilmington reported power out countywide in Florence County.
- Winter Storm Pax, February 2014: about 144,000 co-op members lost power, most in the Midlands and Pee Dee. Most were restored in about eight days.
Florence Regional Airport hit 14 degrees on December 26, 2022 and 100 degrees on July 5 and July 8, 2026. Those are the days that matter most when an older parent or a new baby is at home.
What size Generac does my house need?
The right Generac size depends on what you want running when the power is out. We size the generator to the loads you want covered.
Your tech will ask which of these matter to your household:
- Heating and cooling
- Refrigerator and freezer
- Water heater
- Well pump or sump pump
- Medical equipment or a home office
Whole-home doesn’t have to mean the biggest unit
Generac’s Load Manager, also called the Smart Management Module, can manage up to 8 loads. Generac says it “allows for a reduction in the minimum size of the generator for a more cost-effective installation.”
Generac also says its HVAC energy manager “reduces the need to oversize your generator.” Ask your tech whether either fits your house.
Natural gas or propane?
A Generac standby generator can run on natural gas or propane. Dominion Energy South Carolina supplies natural gas in Florence County. A gas meter or a Dominion bill tells you if your home has it.
No gas line? Propane is widely available across the rural Pee Dee from regional suppliers. The tank is a separate cost, and your supplier sets and fills it.
Your tech will check which fuel your address has before you pick a model.
Can I plug a portable generator into my house?
No. FEMA says never connect a generator directly to home wiring.
- Generac says backfeeding without a transfer switch can electrocute utility workers and violates the National Electrical Code.
- Duke Energy says a transfer switch should be installed by a licensed electrician.
- The CDC says run a portable generator outdoors only, more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
- Never run one in a home or garage. Keep battery carbon monoxide alarms in the house.
What happens before the install?
- Your tech checks your panel, your fuel and the loads you want covered.
- The City of Florence trade permit form has a generator line under electrical permits. Florence County requires a permit to alter or repair a building.
