A ductless mini-split heats and cools one room, or several, without ductwork. Quality Service Company, LLC installs them in Florence, SC and across the Pee Dee, and our weather and homes make a strong case for them.
Here’s why mini-splits fit so well here, and how to tell if one is right for your house.
What is a mini-split?
A mini-split has an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units. A small line set runs through the wall between them. Each indoor unit has its own setting, so each room gets the temperature its people want.
A mini-split is a heat pump. The same system cools in summer and heats in winter.
Why do mini-splits suit Pee Dee weather?
Summers are long and hot. Florence Regional Airport averages 70.2 days a year at 90 degrees or higher, 55.1 of them from June through August (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). A room that faces the afternoon sun can run well above the rest of the house.
The air is wet. NOAA’s engineering weather data counts 2,992 hours a year in Florence with a wet bulb above 67 degrees, its mark for a humid climate. Cooling here is as much about moisture as heat, and a system sized for the room handles both better than one that cycles on and off.
Heating and cooling are about equal. Florence needs about as much heating as cooling in a normal year, by NOAA’s degree-day count. That’s the job a heat pump does best.
Winter has a few hard nights. Florence averages 40 nights a year at 32 degrees or lower, and 3.2 at 20 or lower. Last winter brought seven nights at 20 or lower and a low of 8 degrees on February 2, 2026. Some mini-splits carry an ENERGY STAR cold-climate certification for nights like those.
Which Pee Dee homes are a good fit?
- Older homes. In the City of Florence, 46.7% of homes were built before 1980 (Census ACS 2020–2024). A mini-split can add comfort to a room without opening walls for new ducts.
- Manufactured homes. In Florence County, 17.7% of homes are mobile homes (ACS 2020–2024). A mini-split can serve a room or a whole small home without ductwork.
- Additions and converted spaces. Bonus rooms, sunrooms, garages turned into living space and workshops often sit past the end of the ductwork.
- The room that never feels right. If one bedroom is always hotter or colder than the rest, it can get its own system and its own setting.
What should I look for in a mini-split?
- The right size. An oversized unit cools fast, shuts off and leaves the room damp. Your tech should measure the room, not guess.
- A SEER2 rating. It shows how efficiently the system cools over a season. Read what a SEER2 rating means.
- Heat on cold nights. Check the lowest outdoor temperature the maker rates for heating, and whether the model is ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified.
- Your panel. Each system needs its own circuit. Your tech should check your electrical panel before recommending one.
Which mini-splits do we install?
We’re an authorized Samsung dealer. We install Samsung WindFree wall units, which ENERGY STAR lists at 20.0 to 25.0 SEER2. We also install Samsung’s ceiling cassette and floor console with its Premium outdoor unit, a pairing that is ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified. See Samsung mini-splits for the full lineup.
Frequently asked questions
Can a mini-split heat a whole house?
It can in a smaller home, often with a multi-zone system that runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit. In a larger home, mini-splits usually cover the rooms the main system can’t. Your tech will look at the layout and tell you which fits.
Do mini-splits need maintenance?
Yes. The indoor filters need regular cleaning, and the indoor blower and outdoor coil need cleaning over time. Learn more about HVAC maintenance and tune-ups.
